this book by Genevieve Antoine Dariaux is refreshing. The funniest chapter was on "Knees." Too short of shorts with butt cheeks showing is considered vulgar. I jump to the conclusion too short of skirts worn with stilettos in the daytime would be considered by Madame Dariaux vulgar, too. I've made a few fashion gaffes in my lifetime, but not one exposing my butt cheeks during the day (or night) at work.I'm sure young ladies today might think this book is terribly outdated, but it's just what I needed to read. After having lost a substantial amount of weight through a lifestyle change in diet, I realized if I were called to an evening social event, I have nothing in my closet to wear that fits! I decided to seek out fashion ideas, and I stumbled across this book on Amazon. I found many of the comments intriguing, so I bought "A Guide to Elegance", read it -- and glad I did.With the advice in this book, I think I have found the perfect ensemble to wear if I need to go to a semi-formal evening event. Dariaux offers tips on color combinations, neck and hemlines, jewelry (both real and costume), and types and color of shoes to wear with what outfits. I found her advice extraordinarily helpful and enlightening. Keep in mind the author is discussing elegance and eschews following the latest fashion trends. Fashion trends and fads tend to detract from elegance.I learned a great deal from reading this book. I did not know the history of the wedge shoe. If you don't know, you'll be surprised to learn the where and why of the invention of this classless, shoe style.Granted the book was written in a past era. I am not acquainted with women today who have a vibrant social life of going out to events every evening. Most women I know are struggling to keep balance with both job/career and home life. I don't live in the city and go out to the country for week-long visits, so that part of the book was old-fashioned. But I did enjoy reading the contrast of what to wear in the city compared to the country, and what hour of the evening to wear what type of dress and so on.If you need to revisit what proper dress might be for any occasion, this book will help sort out the do's and don't's. It is a guide to elegance, which truly never goes out of style. What the world needs now is elegance.

This is absolutely precious. I purchased this for my guest bedroom and got my first stamp of approval from my house guest just last night! I read another book by Kathleen Tessaro called Elegance, which was based in part on this book. After reading some of the original content, I decided I had to have the original! While the advice given by Ms. Dariaux may seem rather dated at first, it does have a lot of common sense which never goes out of style. She is a true original.

I used to live in a country where Paris runway show videos were regularly part of prime time viewing! Women were very fashion conscious, and being bombarded I learned how to distinguish quality & style from passing fad. This book is a wonderful guide to that "something" that makes someone stand out even in today's atmosphere of bling, ka-Ching, and dah-ling. Ms. Dariaux's references can be a little quaint, & yes dated (but not without charm) and beyond most people's milieu - in giving wardrobe advice she refers to clients' selections in the very rarified haute couture house in which she was director. But it's these very glimpses on how people who know about quality, and who have the best to choose from, that will guide you in making confident, hell-to-high water wardrobe choices. Think timelessness, quality and über style. If you are into the latest anything, this book may not be for you, unless you wish to change. It appears everyone now wants to capture the refinement of "Grace, Audrey & Jackie"; this book is of that mindset. Ms. Dariaux charmingly & sensibly offers precise commentary & guidance towards this end. Interesting note: Ms. Dariaux doesn't mention money/budget/brands, but says 'buy the best you can afford, & good cut/silhouette/color over other considerations'. Spoken like a true haute couture insider. Not a long book; topics/apparel categories impeccably organized A to Z. Year after year this book has been an inspiration. Not surprising, I check out fashion publications often - this volume holds its own against newer style/fashion books - aptly titled.

About the Author
Philip J. Adler taught college courses in world history to undergraduates for almost thirty years prior to his recent retirement. Dr. Adler earned his Ph.D. at the University of Vienna following military service overseas in the 1950s. His dissertation was on the activity of the South Slav emigres during World War I, and his academic specialty was the modern history of Eastern Europe and the Austro-Hungarian empire. His research has been supported by Fulbright and the National Endowment for the Humanities grants. Dr. Adler has published widely in the historical journals of the U.S. and German-speaking Europe. He is currently professor emeritus at East Carolina University, where he spent most of his teaching career.

Randall L. Pouwels earned his B.A. in history at the University of Wisconsin and his Ph.D. in history at UCLA. His Ph.D. dissertation was on the history of Islam in East Africa. His book, HORN AND CRESCENT: CULTURAL CHANGE AND TRADITIONAL ISLAM ON THE EAST AFRICAN COAST, 800-1900 (Cambridge, 1987), has become a standard work in African history. THE HISTORY OF ISLAM IN AFRICA (Athens, Oxford, and Cape Town, 2000) was jointly edited with Nehemia Levtzion of Hebrew University, Jerusalem. Widely praised in reviews, it was selected by Choice as an Outstanding Academic Title for 2001 and was made a selection of the History Book Club. In addition, he has written numerous articles and reviews on East African history, the history of Islam in Africa, and historical methodologies. Dr. Pouwels's other research interests include the history of the Middle East, the Indian Ocean, and the history and archaeology of Native Americans. Over the years, his work has been supported by grants and fellowships from Fulbright-Hays, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Social Studies Research Council, the National Geographic Society, and the American Philosophical Society. He taught African history for over twenty years at LaTrobe University in Melbourne, Australia, and at UCLA. He has been the Professor of African and Middle Eastern History at the University of Central Arkansas since 1984.

In this memoir, the man most responsible for Singapore's astonishing transformation from colonial backwater to economic powerhouse describes how he did it over the last four decades. It's a dramatic story, and Lee Kuan Yew has much to brag about. To take a single example: Singapore had a per-capita GDP of just $400 when he became prime minister in 1959. When he left office in 1990, it was $12,200 and rising. (At the time of this book's writing, it was $22,000.) Much of this was accomplished through a unique mix of economic freedom and social control. Lee encouraged entrepreneurship, but also cracked down on liberties that most people in the West take for granted--chewing gum, for instance. It's banned in Singapore because of "the problems caused by spent chewing gum inserted into keyholes and mailboxes and on elevator buttons." If American politicians were to propose such a thing, they'd undoubtedly be run out of office. Lee, however, defends this and similar moves, such as strong antismoking laws and antispitting campaigns: "We would have been a grosser, ruder, cruder society had we not made these efforts to persuade people to change their ways.... It has made Singapore a more pleasant place to live in. If this is a 'nanny state,' I am proud to have fostered one." Lee also describes one of his most controversial proposals: tax breaks and schooling incentives to encourage educated men and women to marry each other and have children. "Our best women were not reproducing themselves because men who were their educational equals did not want to marry them.... This lopsided marriage and procreation pattern could not be allowed to remain unmentioned and unchecked," writes Lee. Most of the book, however, is a chronicle of how Lee helped create so much material prosperity. Anticommunism is a strong theme throughout, and Lee comments broadly on international politics. He is cautiously friendly toward the United States, chastising it for a "dogmatic and evangelical" foreign policy that scolds other countries for human-rights violations, except when they interfere with American interests, "as in the oil-rich Arabian peninsula." Even so, he writes, "the United States is still the most benign of all the great powers.... [and] all noncommunist countries in East Asia prefer America to be the dominant weight in the power balance of the region." From Third World to First is not the most gripping book imaginable, but it is a vital document about a fascinating place in a time of profound transition. --John J. Miller

Yew is not an endearing figure. He is arrogant, self-righteous, and seems unduly sensitive to criticism by "outsiders" of Singapore's record on human rights. Despite occasional efforts to hide his less-than-pleasant characteristics, they often burst through in his long and often fascinating account of the dramatic transformation of this island nation into a stable and prosperous society. As prime minister for more than three decades, Yew certainly merits credit for Singapore's emergence, and there is much to be learned from his version of his stewardship. This is a detailed and sometimes difficult read, particularly if one lacks a strong grounding in macroeconomics. Still, his description of the difficulties of nation building in a multiethnic society has great value; his efforts to mesh Western concepts of free enterprise with Third World traditions of a "guided economy" may not have universal applicability, but they deserve close scrutiny. This is an essential contribution in efforts to understand why some societies seem so successful in becoming important players in the global economy. I lived in Singapore for four years towards of the end of Lee Kuan Yew's tenure as Prime Minister and traveled there many times before and since. What Mr. Lee created in Singapore is a masterpiece of political, economic and social engineering. It represents an important alternative from the inefficiencies and deficiencies of both a free wheeling democracy and autocratic rule. It is the most intelligently run government I have ever run across.No politician speaks more directly and with greater clarity than Lee Kuan Yew. "Third World to First World" is a great chronicle of his thought process, experiences and view of the world. It remains highly relevant today. A really great book.

Outstanding man, outstanding writing, outstanding story. Though, like any person with their own opinions, I didn't agree with every one of Mr. Yew's views on life and the world we could all learn some valuable lessons in reality by reading this book and truly contemplating all he accomplished. Amazing (and I hate that word). I've been gobbling up books for the last nine months like I own stock in Amazon and this has been my favorite thus far. Highly recommended.

With only three square miles Mr. Yew led his nation into the modern era by using education and giving it's citizens a sense of of themselves in knowing that freedom can be achieved through staying single minded in purpose. How Mr. Yew handled the myriad is problems, especially the hateful communists, was just brilliant!

It's a very engaging book. Mr. Lee Kuan Yew had a lot of wise sayings and he was so predictable. He had very good foresight and events indeed happened according to his words. He meant what he said and was able to transform a tiny island into one of the world's busiest nation within a short spam of time. Very few political leaders would be able to achieve that. LKY had made Singaporeans a product of Singapore. Once I pick up the book to read, it's hard to put it down.

10 year review - after such a long time, this is one of the few books I specifically remember as a great one. I read it as I was actually touring around Singapore as a young college student, and it made an impression on me.

Horrigan, publisher of the journal Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine, sought out eight women whose work she admires- -a healer, an English professor who is also a shaman, an anthropologist, a Jungian psychoanalyst and performance artist, an Apache medicine woman, a college dean, a part-Cherokee, part-Seneca songwriter, and a feminist writer--and interviewed them for their views on menopause. Every interview is accompanied by a glowing tribute from the author, who presents her interviewees as remarkable, wise, and deeply spiritual and insightful women, and herself as the novice who gains in wisdom as she listens to them. The women explore the female psyche through visions, parables, ancient myths and legends, and tales of goddesses, archetypes, and matriarchies. Crash Course always pulls through. Another brilliant book!This book summarizes everything you need to know and is done in a way that doesn't confuse you with big words or stress you out. It explains every answer to leave you with confidence after reading.GOT ME A 5

I took the APES Exam this Monday do I do have some authority on the effectiveness of Crash Course. The team has my utmost gratitude for the FRQs, all of which I felt 99% confident in. This year, I'm self-studying APES, Psy, and US History, along with 4 other AP classes full time at school. My schedule is intense so I obviously could not afford to memorize the book. However, to get a sense of just how much is good enough, I read the entire book front to back twice closely, made Quizlet sets, studied them brutally and took multiple practice exams. You don't have to memorize small details but certainly try to get through as much as possible. I felt okay (60-80% correct) about the MC section, though I do not recommend any student self-studying to rely solely on CC. Youtube's Mr. Anderson is a great resource and everything else you may need can be found online. I appreciate the free practice exams offered along with the book. They greatly helped. This book is definitely worth the money, especially with useful test tips and math reviews! Always always look up maps of biome and resources maps! I can't emphasize enough how those sets (5-6 questions) messed me up. Though APES is known to be one of the easier AP exams, no AP exam is easy. Then again, I didn't take the class or read a full textbook. Good luck!

This review book is short and to the point, which is great for last minute cramming sessions or a quick review guide right before you take your actual APES exam. I only used this book and my teacher's resources to study and managed a 4. Memorize important information and apply carefully on the test. You guys can do it!

I love this book! I wish I had had it as a guide for my students sooner.The tips are wonderful, the content is current and well-explained.It confirmed for me that I covered the important topics this year, even if my students did not do the work necessary to actually learn the material. If they all had Kindles or iPads or some such device, downloading this book is a great value.The content is well presented and pared down to the bare minimum. But there are over 250 pages so the author does not skimp on details, either. The tips on the different types of questions are very helpful and comprehensive.

This was such a huge help to me during my AP enviro class. Even though it says crash course i found that it was helpful to be used as a study guide (in addition to the one my teacher handed out) on the unit tests. When used throughout the year it can be a really helpful tool. it does not have all the exercises that some of the other fancy books have but it's fantastic to help give you guidelines for study and review and then a few nights before the exam just to read over. It WON'T tell you everything you need to know just by reading it! you can't read this the week or night before and expect to do great on the exam you have to put effort in! but i found it really helpful and much less intimidating than those giant textbook sized review books. this gets right to the point and gives really amazing tips instead of bombarding you with way too much info at one time.

Michele Davidson [COPY TO COME for Michele Davidson]   Marcia L. London Marcia L. London has been able to combine her two greatest passions by being both a nurse caring for children and families and a teacher for almost 35 years. She received her B.S.N. and school nurse certificate from Plattsburgh State University in Plattsburgh, New York. After graduation, she began her nursing career as a pediatric nurse at St. Luke’s Hospital in New York City then moved to Pittsburgh, where she began her teaching career. Mrs. London accepted a faculty position at Pittsburgh’s Children’s Hospital Affiliate Program and received her M.S.N. in pediatrics as a clinical nurse specialist from the University of Pittsburgh. Mrs. London began teaching at Beth-El School of Nursing and Health Science in 1974 after opening the first intensive care nursery at Memorial Hospital of Colorado Springs. She has served in many administrative and faculty positions at Beth-El, including coordinator for nursing care of children for 32 years. Mrs. London maintains her clinical skills working in an urgent care and after-hours clinic and doing undergraduate pediatric clinical supervision. She obtained her postmaster’s neonatal nurse practitioner certificate in 1983 and subsequently developed the neonatal nurse practitioner (NNP) program and the master’s NNP program at Beth-El. She is active nationally in neonatal nursing and was involved in the development of the Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Educational Program Guidelines. She has contributed 5 chapters to various neonatal nursing texts. Mrs. London is active in nurse practitioner education in general. She was involved in the revision of the Core Competency for Nurse Practitioners and Curriculum Guidelines for Nurse Practitioner Education, as a member of the Education Committee of the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties and participated as part of the Core Competency Validation Expert Panel. Mrs. London has also pursued her interest in college student learning by taking doctoral classes in  higher education administration and adult learning at the University of Denver in Colorado. She feels fortunate to be involved in the education of her future colleagues. Her teaching philosophy is that, with support, students can achieve more than they may initially believe they are capable of achieving. Mrs. London and her husband have two sons and one dog (Reilly, daughter by proxy). Her two sons, Craig and Matthew, are involved in computer informatics, and media arts and animation and are more than willing to give Mom helpful hints.   Patricia A. Wieland Ladewig Patricia A. Wieland Ladewig received her B.S. from the College of Saint Teresa in Winona, Minnesota. After graduation, she worked as a pediatric nurse before joining the U.S. Air Force. After completing her tour of duty, Dr. Ladewig relocated at Florida, where she accepted a faculty position at Florida State University. There she embraced teaching as her calling. Over the years, she taught at several schools of nursing while earning her M.S.N. in maternal-newborn nursing from Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., and her Ph.D. in higher education administration from the University of Denver in Colorado. In addition, she became a women’s health nurse practitioner and maintained a part-time clinical practice. In 1988 Dr. Ladewig became the first director of the nursing program at Regis College in Denver and., in 1991, when the college became Regis University, she became dean of the Rueckert-Hartman School for Health Professions. Under her guidance, the Department of Nursing has added a graduate program and the School  has added three departments: the Department of Physical Therapy, the Department of Health Services Administration and Management, and the Department of Health Care Ethics. Dr. Ladewig feels that teaching others to be excellent, caring nurses gives her the best of all worlds because it keeps her in touch with the profession she loves and enables her to help shape the future of the nursing profession. When not at work or writing textbooks, Pat and her husband, Tim, enjoy skiing, baseball games, and traveling. However their greatest pleasure comes from their family: son Ryan, his wife, Amanda, and grandson Reed; and son, Erik, his wife Kedri, and granddaughter Emma.

This book was required for my nursing school - BSN program. I feel the selection of books my program chose were all very informative, to the point and we used the books for the classes that required them. During nursing school most people do not know where their career will take them, there are so many options the RN has available, so building a strong foundation is essential to success in the field. Nursing books are not written to be entertaining they are for educational purpose only. This book definitely offered education. After you graduate school and chose a path then find the best reference book you can find and carry it with you until the day you retire. I always recommend the additional study guide to a book if one is available.

This text is well written and presented. It is clear, organized, and generally easy to read without boring me to tears. I bought the 8th ed. even though my course assigned the 9th, because this version is so cheap it's practically free. I've looked at the 9th ed. that all my classmates bought (and paid $90+) and the two are so similar that the new version is most certainly not worth the extra expense. Just make sure you check the subjects on the chapters in your syllabus, as some do not match up with the 9th ed.I highly recommend you buy this version in place of the new one!

I had to buy this for a nursing class, but even though it covers the field I want to work in, I will NOT be keeping this as a reference book. The organization of information in this book is confusing and illogical. One has to scan four chapters to get information on a single pregnancy complication. It's unfortunate that this was the textbook of choice for my class. I would have rathered spend my money and time getting into a book I could reference for years to come.

This book is an excellent source of information when it comes to OB. I am very pleased with how the content is easy to understand. The pictures are a great source of information. This by far is the best book a student can purchase for nursing school in your OB rotation. This book went right along on how the teacher explained it to us. Thanks to OLDs for coming up with such a great OB book. Keep up the good work. Students need something that is easy to relate to and understand. I found several errors and I really ended up not using the workbook much. I enjoyed the accompanying textbook but I really would recommend the workbook save your money! It was a required book for our class and I enjoy workbooks and clinical guides that go with textbooks because they summarize information or help you focus on the important parts of chapters but this workbook was more confusing and didn't seem to flow well with the textbook. Textbook is good workbook not really worth the money.

I really loved this book. It was just as the seller decribed in the description as well. This was a life saving book during my OB rotation. I really liked the cards that you could take out of the book and put into your pocket during clinical very nice feature.

I bought this book in the middle of my OB nursing rotation. Wish I had bought it at the beginning of the semester. Great book! Super helpful when writing papers and nursing clinical logs.

About the Author
Alissa Nutting was born in rural Michigan. She received a BA degree from the University of Florida and an MFA degree from the University of Alabama, where she served as Editor for the Black Warrior Review. Her writing has appeared in Tin House, Fence, BOMB, the fairy tale anthology My Mother She Killed Me, My Father He Ate Me, as well as many other journals. She is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where she has received Cobain and Schaeffer Fellowships in Fiction. She is fiction editor of the literary journal Witness and managing editor of Fairy Tale Review.
